HowTo install FreeBSD 5.4

Here are some outline instructions for installing FreeBSD 5.4 for use as a server.

  • Insert the CD and Boot
  • Choose Standard Installation
    • OK
    • A = Use Entire Disk
    • Q to finish
    • Standard – Install a standard MBR (no boot manager)
    • C = Create
      • 256M
      • FS – A file system
      • / - mount point
    • C = Create
      • 1G
      • SWAP – A Swap partition
    • C = Create
      • 2G
      • FS – A file system
      • /var – mount point
    • C = Create
      • 1G
      • FS – A file system
      • /tmp – mount point
    • C = Create
      • [Enter]
      • FS – A file system
      • /usr – Mount point
    • Q = Finish
    • Choose Distribution
    • B Custom
      • Base
      • Compat4x
      • Dict
      • Doc
      • Man
      • Src
        • All
      • Ports
      • Perl
    • Exit
    • 1 CD/DVD – Install from FreeBSD CD/DVD
    • [YES] – Last Chance
    • After Installation [OK]
    • [YES] – Would you like to configure any Ethernet or SLIP/PPP network devices?
      • Select card – [OK]
      • [NO] – Do you want to try Ipv6 configuration of this interface?
      • [YES] – Do you want to try DHCP configuration of the interface? Scanning for DHCP servers
      • Host – give it a name
      • [OK]
    • [NO] – Do you want this machine to function as a network gateway?
    • [Yes] – Do you want to configure inetd and the network services that it provides?
    • [No] – Do you want to have anonymous FTP access to this machine?
    • [No] – Do you want to configure this machine as an NFS server?
    • [No] – Do you want to configure this machine as an NFS client?
    • [No] – Would you like to customize your console settings?
    • [Yes] – Would you like to set this machine’s time zone now?
      • [Yes] – Is this machine’s CMOS clock set to UTC?
      • 8 – Europe
      • [OK]
      • 44 – United Kingdom
      • [OK]
      • 1 – Great Britain
      • [OK]
      • [Yes] – Does the abbreviation ‘BST’ look reasonable?
    • [Yes] – Would you like to enable Linux binary compatibility?
    • [Yes] – Does this system have a PS/2, serial, or bus mouse?
      • 2 – Enable
      • [Yes]
      • X – Exit this menu
    • [No] – Would you like to browse the collection now?
    • [No] – Would you like to add any initial user accounts to the system?
    • [OK] – You must set the system managers password.
    • [No] – Visit the general configuration menu for a chance to set any last minute options?
    • [X Exit Install]
    • [Yes] – Are you sure you wish to exit?
    • (remove CD)
